The Lion Was Eating the Doughnut Man Submitted by sisterd. on 2007-11-18 10:32 PM. Currently I'm reading my fifth Hiassen novel, and here's a little taste of why. I'm going to let Hiassen do most of the talking here. The novel: Stormy Weather. First published in 1995. (I'm late to the Hiaasen party). My time has been very tight lately, and I had about 8 minutes of break from work to sit down, have a Diet Dr. Pepper, and read a few paragraphs. Here are my favorite sentences from a single two-page spread: "Avila thought: I'm either dead or dreaming. Because it should hurt worse than this, being nailed to a cross." "...Clearly it was sent to save his life. And not by the Catholic God -- Catholics had no expertise in the summoning of demonic jungle beasts." "Avila's knowledge of lion eating habits was sketchy, but he couldn't believe the animal could still be hungry after devouring the substantial Mr. Jackson." These small tidbits kept me going the rest of the night. I love Hiaasen's total irreverence. He's not unlike Tom Robbins in that way. Robbins' Still Life with Woodpecker remains on my "books I'd take to a desert isle" list were I to be stuck on one for a year and have the option of pre-selecting my light re-re-re-reading. |
